In the opening round today, Vandy will take on the Colonials of George Washington. This is only the second meeting ever between the two schools, with the Commodores holding the 1-0 series lead thanks to a 76-74 victory during the 1990-91 season.
While the ‘Dores are coming into the tournament on a cool note after losing in the first round of the SEC tournament, GW is blazing. After a 4-game skid, the Colonials have won 8 in a row, finishing with the A-10 championship game over Rhode Island. They are outscoring their opponents by 11.5 points during this streak.
Vanderbilt should have the advantage in this game, as GW has played a weaker schedule, and seems to be a team that Vanderbilt matches up well against (unlike Arkansas). GW plays an uptempo game, and I think Vandy can match them step-for-step and run-for-run. While Derrick Byars will need to have a good game, I look for someone like Dan Cage to slip free more than normal and open up for a 15-20 point game.
Gametime 3:40pm (CDT).
